This week the girls made their classroom debut. I was invited to speak to a group of senior students at Georgia-Cumberland Academy about the challenges and joys of raising twin newborn babies. With girls in tow, we barely made it into the building before hearing "are they real?" from many of the students walking by. It was truly like a show and tell, with my baby girls as the item to show! I loved every minute of talking to the students about parenthood and newborns and twins. They surprised me with their great questions such as "How many hours of sleep do you get a night?" "What is bath time like with two?" and fearlessly asked, "Did you have a c-section?" "Did you have an epidural or go natural?" The best question came at the end of class, after the room had cleared out. A male student came running back in and said "I've got a question. I was just afraid to ask you in front of the whole class. Do you breastfeed them both at the same time?" That's right...I said this question came from a male student. He was clearly intrigued at this, and was truly asking in the most non-intrusive, purely medical-like way. I was impressed at the maturity of these senior high school students, and pleased that I made them feel comfortable enough to ask me anything about motherhood and twin babies.
The message I wanted to be sure got across - hopefully it did -was that there are definitely lots of things in life that need to be in place before having kids. For me, it was 1) my career - knowing who I was and what I wanted from life; then 2) my marriage - a strong foundation of time together; and finally 3) the financial stability to handle children. But the most important message had to do with my ever growing faith in God. I let the students know that God has a plan for each of us....and when I was worried because I wasn't married and all of my other friends were, or that I didn't have kids when all of my other friends were having them, God had everything planned out perfectly. And, just by following His lead, I was brought to Chris in perfect timing, and we ultimately had these two beautiful babies at the most perfect timing. My timing for when I thought all of this should have happened would have been soooo off. When God is in control of our lives, we will one day see the absolute beautiful plans He has in place for our lives. For me personally, those plans have become so clear by my incredible husband and the arrival of my two beautiful baby girls. God is so good.
