A Day of Firsts

So today, both girls had two different "firsts". First, Savannah was sitting on the floor playing with her musical toy and she clapped her hands! So cute!! She just watched me closely when I started clapping my hands...too precious. Then later, when she was eating, she clapped her hands again! So, that was Savannah's "first" today.

Then this evening, Madeline had a "first". I was giving both of the girls a bath and they were just playing and laughing and having a great time together when Madeline suddenly stopped and became very focused. She grunted a little and let out a super loud toot! I cracked up at her and just laughed and said "that's alright Madeline, as long as there was nothing else with it!" She just smiled big at me....then I saw it. Lots of it.

I immediately pulled Savannah out of the tub and then Madeline. The tub was later scrubbed down with heavy duty cleansers. Yep, that was Madeline's "first" of the day....Savannah hasn't experienced that first yet, but I guess since she was in the tub, it was a first for both of them. :-)

Summer Ending

I love these feet!

After all of the fun these girls have had this summer, we are ending it with a bang. For the last week we've been at their Nana and Papa's in North Carolina and enjoyed spending the weekend with them down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This was the girls second trip to the beach this summer. I had to smile a little when I kept reading about everyone's kids starting up school and while they were headed to class, we were headed to the beach. Just one of the many joys of being a stay at home mom with my girls --having the chance and time to go visit family one more time before summer is over. They loved the sand...until the water came in and surprised them. At that point, the fun was over and we spent the rest of our time at the pool. Maybe next summer the ocean won't be so scary! Much easier to recap our time here in pics, so here goes!

My little beach bums at their Nana and Papa's house

As soon as we arrived, the girls were ready for their supper, so Nana and Papa fed the hungry munchkins!

And shortly after, Madeline was so excited she kicked her sweet potatoes right off the bar and all over the floor and wall! Of course Bailey was happy to help with the clean up. ha!

Savannah goes crazy over glasses! She wants our drinks like there's no tomorrow!

Such big girls!! Getting ready for a big night out on the town.

Savannah completely LOVING the lazy river, and Madeline close behind!

I mean....these girls LOVED it. Their little legs just kicked away while the water carried them down the "lazy river".

Oh my goodness how much do I love these girls!!!

Miracles

Wow. There are moments when I am reminded that yes, miracles do still happen every day. The baby I spoke of in my last blog is actually doing amazingly well! She is off of oxygen, nursing on demand, and just got moved out of the NICU and into her own private room with her mommy and daddy. God is so good! So very, very good. I started reading up on a blog a family member was posting on the progress: No Less Days I am just amazed at the turnaround this tiny gift from God has made, and am thankful to Him for protecting this small baby girl! Yes, God's still in the miracle making business. But then, of course He is! Just look at our two tiny miracles and the progress they have made from the NICU to now, 8 months later! He remains to be the ultimate miracle maker.

Happy Place, Sad Heart

I know that my blogging is supposed to be my happy time...my happy reflections on my girls. (Which is so very, very easy to do if I do say so myself!) My heart is so full with the love that I have for my baby girls. I have found however that ever since I've become a mother, anything - a movie, a news story, or even just another mom and child I see in the grocery store - anything that is about the mistreatment or accident of an infant or small child just breaks my heart into a million pieces. I have always had a soft spot for children - of course! Who doesn't? But ever since becoming a mother, I literally cannot hear some of the stories or watch some of the movies that are about children/infants being mistreated, injured or worse. I literally can't stomach it.

So, tonight I sit here with yet another broken heart for another story. Two stories, actually. First, my husband has a friend who gave birth a few days ago to a baby girl and had to be intubated. However, it took over an hour to intubate the baby. They're also not certain how long she may have not been breathing while she was still inside the womb. As you can imagine, the baby is thought to be brain dead now and a decision is to be made tomorrow as to the next steps. I simply cannot imagine being in that place. I brushed up against that place as one of my sweet, tiny, preemie daughter's had to intubated at birth. Thankfully, I was at an incredible hospital with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit just down the hall with top notch neonatal staff that were already in the room with me at birth and immediately intubated my daughter within minutes, if not seconds. A few hours or less later, she was off the breathing tube, no problem. Thank God.

The second story is about a 3 year old who was killed in a tragic boating accident over the weekend near my hometown in northeast Tennessee. This was not a careless accident by thoughtless parents, it was a child who got excited when he saw his grandparents out in their boat and in his quick excitement, fell over the back of the boat into a moving propeller. Yet another too-close-for-comfort moment as we have a boat of our own and plan to raise our girls at the lake in the summers just like I was growing up. We will continue to do so as life cannot stop due to random accidents, but stories like this definitely make you stop and really re-think how we do the things we do in this life, and what if anything we can do better to prevent accidents from happening. Again, cannot even begin to try to imagine, and cannot fathom the emotions of this mother. It just makes me long for the day when Christ returns to put an end to the senseless tragic pain.

My heart breaks, I mean breaks, for these two mothers. As a mother now, I can fully comprehend the love they have for their babies, and cannot begin to comprehend the equally dark, dark place they must be in at this time. All I can do, as a fellow mother, is pray. Pray for these two women and pray for a peace that cannot come from human efforts, but instead can only come from the Healer above. There are no words, no actions, nothing on this earth that can take their pain away. Only our loving Savior above can.

As I said in the beginning, my blogging is my happy - or sometimes venting - place about my precious babies...but it is also blogging thoughts from the heart of a mother. And tonight, blogging was the only outlet I could think of to express my sorrow for these two terrible stories. My prayers are with the families, and while one family is dealing with the aftershock of death, I pray for a miracle in the second who is holding on to all chances of hope that somehow, that baby will be ok. In the meantime, I praise God for two healthy, happy, beautiful and peacefully sleeping baby girls that God has gifted to my care, and I thank Him for the blessing they are to me and my husband each and every day.

Eight Months Old

Eight Months Old. Say what? Excuse me? Yikes. We're only 4 months from their very first birthday! Wow. My babies are growing up! They love, love, love to sit up like big girls now and play with each other. Bath time is getting more hysterical every day. Savannah is wild. I mean wild in the bathtub! She kicks and splashes like crazy, and Madeline is getting more and more reserved. I call her my little miss prim and proper girl! She sits up straight as a board and just looks at Savannah like "what ARE you doing?!" They are sooo different and I love it.

One of those little twin mom annoyances is when people tell me they are surprised at how different they act. Really? If you have more than one child, are they exactly the same in their behavior? Just because two girls are born on the exact same day and look the same, does not mean they are the same person. They are not. They are tiny individuals just like you and I. And I love getting to know each of them as their own little person that they each are!

Yesterday the girls spent the day sitting through appointments. First, they joined their daddy for his spine doctor appointment. While waiting in the waiting room, the girls sat up in the big girl waiting room chairs next to their daddy. Simply adorable. Next, they joined mommy for her hair appointment! Side note here: This was the first time I had gotten my hair cut in 6, yes 6 months. Wonder why?! ha! Anyway, this was the girls first time at the salon! Fun times. Then, they capped the day off with play time with their cousins McKenna and Caitlin, Aunt Robin, Aunt Tonia, and Grammy. It was a fun day for all! My sweet girls are growing and experiencing more and more in life with each new day. I love it. (Have I already said that?)

Lots, and lots, and lots of pics to follow:

Giggleboxes

These girls make me laugh all the time. Their needs are simple: change my diaper, feed me, and let me sleep. If you do these three things, I promise I will laugh and giggle and smile with you when I am awake. It's as simple as that. Ok fine, yes, there are times when the food I feed them may cause some serious gas, or the incoming teeth are a potential cause of pain. These two things alone or combined can really make for a nightmarish day or night at our house. BUT, the point is that these girls have lots of laughter and smiles and giggles ready for me and their daddy at the drop of a hat. Finally, I captured a moment of each of them on video. Sorry for the movement, I was holding the camera and trying to tickle at the same time. But, here they are. My two little giggleboxes!!

First Trip to the Lake

Chris and I love to go boating and I love to ski. Last summer I wasn't able to ski because I was carrying my two precious girls in the womb! This summer, we haven't gone because...well...the summer has just gotten away from us. So, when my dad came to visit us for a few days this week, we finally got the boat out and took the girls to the lake for the first time. They would have loved it if it weren't for their obviously necessary life vests! Bless their little "Sponge Bob Square Pants lookalike life vest" hearts! The vests are infant sized 0 -50 lbs....with that kind of range, there is bound to be zero comfort for my little 13 pounders. Other than that, they loved the boat! Madeline kept her nose plowed into the seat and just smiled while we road out on the water! Savannah slept soundly to the hum of the motor. Good times. Here are some pics of our fun day!

Cradle Roll..for Beginner Mom's

This morning the girls went to Cradle Roll at church and had the best time playing and singing! Mommy messed up though...I'm new to Cradle Roll too....so, when the little picture card was passed to each of them to place their sticker on for their attendance today, I went a little nuts. I didn't know what it was for, so I took Madeline's and just started putting lots of stickers on it!  I thought we were decorating this pretty picture card!  Little did I know that this is Cradle Roll's way of letting the little ones put 1 sticker on for every week they are in attendance.  Oops.  I guess Madeline is ahead of the curve, attending every single week and some, while Savannah has just been slacking and skipping church!  ha ha! We haven't even started discussing the songs....don't remember half of them.  But I know I will!  Sorry girls....I'll start to get the hang of this Cradle Roll Mom thing...love it!

Fort Knox

The time has come. I imagine this is what it feels like if we one day cave in and buy a mini-van....all of the changes that come from parenthood. The once "our things" or "this is how I like to decorate.." are now really "their things" and "time to compromise on the house decorating" based on the safety and convenience and fun times/happiness of our children.

The girls are not yet crawling, but they roll everywhere. Absolutely everywhere! I will walk into the kitchen only to turn around and find one of the girls has rolled all the way under her bouncer seat and is stuck! Or, one will roll from her blanket over to the couch. Madeline is definitely trying to crawl I must say. She puts her head down and plows forward, then with her butt up in the air and head down, she'll just twist her body and just fall over onto her back. And then laugh hysterically. As then do I....It is hilarious!

We have stairs in our living room. Stairs that lead straight down to the front door with all of its hard tile flooring at the entrance. Finally Chris and I decided it was time to break down and get the gate up.
This feels a bit like Fort Knox. Fort Knox and an oversized playpen. I love our new Fort Knox oversized playpen. I wouldn't trade it for the WORLD. And...if the time ever does come...I'll love our mini-van too.
